FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Gov. Branstad to sign Senate File 306
Iowa to become first state in the nation with law ensuring visitation rights of adult children to see ailing parents!
(DES MOINES) – Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad signed Senate File 306 on Friday, April 24, 2015, at 3 p.m. in the Governor’s Formal Office. Senate File 306 is an act relating to communication and visitation between an adult ward and another person.
The governor was joined by Kerri Kasem, daughter of Casey Kasem, who lobbied for the bill after her late father was moved from his nursing home in California, first to Nevada and then to Washington without his children’s knowledge or consent. Kerri Kasem began lobbying lawmakers in states across the country for legislation that would prevent similar instances. Iowa will become the first state to enact such a bill.
Gov. Terry Branstad signed the bill into law. Under the measure, adults who must depend on a legal guardian to manage their affairs would have the right to receive visits from family members and others they have previously expressed interest in seeing. The legal guardian could still control factors like the time and the place of the visits.
The legislation was backed by Mr. Kasem’s daughter Kerri Kasem, who appeared on Simon Conway’s Iowa talk radio show many times advocating for the bill. “I promise you, every single state will have what I have dubbed the visitation bill,” Ms. Kasem said. “We need guardianship laws to change. We need visitation laws to change.”

As an entertainer and the daughter of a renowned celebrity, Kerri Kasem has lived more of her life in the spotlight than most of us. Unfortunately, recent circumstances put her private and very personal family tragedy on the front pages of the news this year. Her legal battle regarding the visitation and medical care of her father, radio icon Casey Kasem, has brought awareness and attention to a cause that many of us may face one day in today’s world of blended families. She founded the Kasem Cares Foundation to establish and fight for the rights to have visitation and reasonable access to an ailing parent, especially when under the care and control of an uncooperative spouse or sibling. She is the spokesperson for the foundation regarding elder abuse awareness and prevention. She is an inspiration and voice of many people going through challenging times. Please help us spread the word on the foundation’s work: click here.
